The
department of seed science and
technology was established in the
year, 1984 with the name seed technology
and renamed in the present name
in the year (2002). Prior to this
it was a state seed testing laboratory
of Govt. of U.P. established in
1963 and working under the administrative control of the economic botanist (Rabi cereal), Kanpur. This
laboratory was rendering custom
services for testing of seed for
purity, germination, moisture,
seed health and varietals identification
through electrophoresis and other
chemicals.

of the Department |
| |
|
|
Teaching |
| ††††††† To
impart instruction of various courses
related to seed science and technology
to B.sc.(Ag),B.sc.(Hsc.), B.sc.(Forestry),
M.sc.(Ag) and Ph. D. programmes.
|
| |
|
|
Research |
| ††††††† To
promote problem oriented need based
fundamental and applied research
in the areas of seed production,
seed certification , seed testing,
seed physiology, seed storage,
seed processing, seed health and
varietal identification through
electrophoresis and seed health
testing.
|
| |
|
|
Extension |
To
participate under extension education
programme through kishan mela, kishan
goshties, krishak helpline and training
programme of farmers, seed growers
and technical personnels engaged
in seed production, seed certification,
deptt of Agriculture and Agriculture
university.
|
| |
|
|
Custom

| ††††††† To
test seed samples for physical
and genetic purity, germination,
moisture and seed health from seed
growers, seed dealers, farmers
and professional seed growers.

Educational
achievements |
| ††††††† The
department have started education
programme from 1984 with the objective
of imparting higher education in
seed science and technology. The
department is imparting instructions
at B.Sc. (Ag. & A.H.), B.Sc. (Home Science)and B.Sc.(forestry) and awarding separately degree
in seed Technology in M.Sc. (Ag.)
and Ph.D., During 1984 to 2004
awarded degree in M.Sc. (Ag.) and
Ph.D. in seed science and technology
are 76 and 14 respectively.

Extension
achievements |
Farmers,
extension workers, seed producers
and farm superintendents visit regularly
department for receiving latest knowledge
on various aspects of seed science
and Technology. Teachers/ scientists
of our department actively participated
in ‘Kishan Goshthies, kisan mela, krishak helpline, ATIC where farmers are actively
involved to know recent techniques
developed for the quality seed and
practical methods of seed production
and storage. The Deptt. have organized
four training programme in 2000-2001,
2001-2002, 2002-03 and 2003-04 for farmers at Kanpur, Thariyan (Fatehpur), Hardoi and Kanpur Dehat, respectively.
More than 100 farmers were trained
in each training programme by University
scientists, officers of govt. deptt
and departmental scientists. Four
training progaramme also organized
for technical personnel working in
the university, deptt. of agriculture and seed certification agency in 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2004 respectively.
More than 25 technical personnel
were trained in each training programme.
|
| |
| Custom
Testing |
Department
is rendering the services of testing
seed for purity, germination, moisture
and seed health. During 1966 to 2004,
44,966 seed samples were received
from different organization and progressive
farmers for testing of moisture,
physical purity, germination and
seed health. Samples were tested
and results communicated to senders.
