The section of EBR was established in 1904 and is one of the first EB of the country along with EB Lyallpur, which has gone to Pakistan. During Rabi 1997-98, The University has made tremendous progress in variety development for various growing situations of the state and made landmark by releasing quality wheat varieties like Deva (K 9107), Ujiyar (9006), Gangotri (K 9162) and Halna (K 7903), not only in the country but also in other parts of the World. In addition, two dwarf verities K 816 and multiple varieties KML 7406 effective against rust were developed during 1971-72 and 1978-80. A distinguished variety Achuta (named after the famous first wheat coordinator of Nepal), is high yielding, multiple resistant (all types of rusts, Karnal bunt, foliar blights and smuts) is a contribution of this section. The ICAR has published a special bulletin highlighting the five wheat varieties of this section like K88, Ujiyar (K9006), Indra (K 8962), Deva (K 9107) and Maghar. Similarly recent introduction is Atal (9644), Deva (K9107) has the distinction of having the highest protein content (13-14%),which is 2% higher than any other variety released so far in the country.
Another significant contribution of this section is the Halna (K 7903) Variety, which is a short duration variety (70-90) days and has been recommended for taking as a late variety in mid January. Similarly, two released and notified varieties namely Indra (K8962) and Gomti (K9465) are doing excellent from October end to middle December under rainfed condition in diara situation. 42 per cent areas under university jurisdiction. Some of the varieties developed by this section have the yield potential of 60-70 q/ha. and can be compared Triveni (K8020) has been recommended for late sown condition during 15% higher than Kalyansona.

 Barley Section

Kanpur is one of the oldest centers in the country for barley crop. This center ha developed 21 varieties for different agro climatic zones i.e. for saline-alkaline, malt and breweries (K-551 and K-508), huskless (Geetanjali and K-1155), feed and folder purpose and diara land conditions 9K-560, Lakhan, K-141 and Geetajali ). Geetajali variety gives the highest malt yield and enjoys the top position in India. It gives 90% of the malt and 8% protein. Azad (K- 125) is suitable for saline-alkaline soils of UP, Bihar and West Bengal. This variety is being used as a national check in all India Coordinated trials. Manjula (K-329) a tall and early maturing variety was introduced in 1988 in late sown condition for UP and NEPZ (North Eastern Plain Zone ). Recently the State Variety Release Committee released barley variety Priti (K-409) in 1997 for cultivation under limited irrigated condition, K-508 (6- rowed) in 1996 and Ritambhra (K-551) a 6-rowed variety in 1997 for malt and brewing purpose, Haritma (K-560) a lodging and rust resistant variety in 1997 for NEPZ under rainfed condition.

 Economic Botanist (Legumes)

This section is running state-financed scheme “Dal Yojna “. This is the oldest and premier pulse improvement center in the country. There are two Professors, 16 Associate Professor, one Assistant Professor and 8 Research Assistents are working in the section . Outstanding varieties like T21, T 7 and T 17 of Arhar; to of Mung; T 3, Radhey and K850 of Chickpea; T 163 of Pea and T 36 and Mallika of Lentil were developed by this University . Besides, Avarodhi and KWR 108 (rust resistant), KGD 1168 (wilt resistant) of chickpea; Rachna, Shikha, Swati and Sapna (powdery mildew resistant ) of pea; Amar (erect) and Azad (sterility mosaic resistant ) of arhar; Shikar, Azad Urd-1 (yellow mosaic resistant ) of urd are some of the resistant varieties have been developed by the University . Urd area in UP area in UP is about 70,000 ha. and now growing to Rabi and even after potato. Indents for breeder seeds for Department of Agriculture & Cooperation, New Delhi and all the states in the country. About 35 per cent more seed is produced than indents Surplus being used for frontline and to the farmers.

 Economic Botanist (Oilseed)

The All India Coordinated Project on Oilseeds-Rapeseed and Mustard was sanctioned to do multidisciplinary research for developing early maturing , high yielding varieties with high oil content and resistance / tolerance against pest and diseases besides, standardization and production and protection technologies for this important region. The section is having technical staff strength of nine scientists with seven supporting staff. The section is credited with many achievements by releasing a large number of acceptable varieties specific to this region. Some of then are Mustard varieties T- 59 (Varuna) for entire country (Released by CVRC) in 1975, Rohini, a zonal check variety (Zone III) for whole UP in 1985, Vardan, a national check variety in late sown for UP and MP in 1985, Vaibhav, in rainfed condition for UP and MP in 1985 and Urvashi for whole UP in 19999 and toria variety Bhawani (a zonal check variety) in 1986 for UP and HP.
