The
department of Entomology was established
as a section of Entomologist in Govt. U.P.
in 1921. The teaching work of Entomology
in graduate level was started in 1928 in
Govt. Agricultural College, Kanpur, while
post graduate classes in Agri. Zoology –Entomology were started in 1944. In 1969, the college was upgraded to the stats
of U.P. Institute of Agril. Sciences and
thus section of Entomologist to Govt. of
U.P. and the Department of Agril. Zoology – Entomology of Govt. Agri. College merged into one and was named as Division
of Entomology. On March 1, 1975, the present
department of Entomology came into existence
after the creation of C.S.A. Univ. of Agri. & Tech., Kanpur. |

The
technical staff members in department of
Entomology are engaged in teaching, research
and extension activities. Department of Entomology
has developed evolved, the Integrated Pest
Management schedules against major pests
of Kharif, Rabi and Zaid crops. Besides,
attempts have been made to fill up the gaps
of research in the field of toxicology, physiology,
taxonomy, nematology, rodentology and bee keeping. The department has also started work on Earthworm rearing and their
beneficial uses for the farmers.

The
department offers under-graduate, post-graduate
and Ph.D. teaching programmes in Entomology.
Every year 10 and 2 students are admitted
in M.Sc. (Ag.) & Ph.D. programmes, respectively.

One
very ambitious and large scale project (worth
Rs. 2 crores) on IPM is being running under
the supervision of Dr. R.S.Bisen, Principal
Investigator (P.I.). As regards the IPM project,
it has three major components of training,
demonstration and mass production of bio-control
agents. This project of IPM is being financed
by World Bank through UPDASP and UPCAR. Besides, one All India Co-ordinated Project on Nematode (AICRP Nematode)
is also operative under the Principal Investigatorship
of Professor Dr. K.D.Upadhyay, Dean, College
of Agriculture, C.S.A.Univ. of Agri. & Tech., Kanpur. This project is financed by ICAR, New Delhi. One scheme on Bee-keeping
is also running in the Department on “no profit – no loss” basis for the production of honey. Another scheme on Biological Control of Braconid
Parasite is also running which is financed
by U.P. Council of Science and Technology,
Lucknow.

The
teaching, research and extension activities
are being smoothly conducted in the department
under the leadership of Prof. R.P.Tripathi.
The department is well known for its teaching
standards throughout the country.

The
Department of Entomology has good number
of academic staff who also provides consultancy
services to farmer’s free of cost. The department is also known as Voluntary Centre for Seed Entomology
under NSP (National Seed project), which
is being supervised by Dr. R.A.Tripathi.
