The
Department of Agricultural Economics and
Statistics is one of the leading department
of the University which was created in
the year 1948 (formally known as Agriculture
College, Kanpur). Since then it has been
actively engaged in teaching, research
and extension activities. The Farm Management
studies sponsored by the Directorate of
Economics and Statistics Govt. of India, were conducted for U.P. State by this Department right from the Years 1954-57.
An Economic Evaluation of S.F.D.A. in U.P.
sponsored by I.C.A.R. was also carried
out by this department during the years
1976-78. This Department under the auspices
of I.C.A.R. in 1976 prepared the Resource
Inventory of District Mirzapur. Since 1988
the department is engaged in Agro-Climatic
Regional Planning of Zone-V, the Upper Gangetic plains Region has prepared the Zonal profile
strategy and quantification of action points
and output plan for VIII & IX Five year planed. Besides, the district development plans of Bulandshahar,
Etawah, Hamirpur, Bareilly and Pratapgarh
were prepared and submitted to Planning
Commission which were highly appreciated.
The department has been catering services
in various other area of planning, resource
management, form advisory services, evaluating
impact of programs, technologies, supporting
in delineating of corporate planning in Agril.

| Teaching
Activities |

The
department also imparts teaching of B.Sc.
Ag., M.Sc. Ag. and Ph.D. classes in Agricultural
Economics. All the latest teaching techniques
are being adopted to teach Graduate & Post Graduate students. During last twenty five years more than 60 students
were awarded Ph.D. Degree. More then 250
student got, M.Sc. (Ag) Degree from this
department. A direct link between the students
and farmers is done through RAWE programme
by this department.

| Research |

The
research activities of the department consisted
of Farm production analysis, farm business
analysis of different districts and economic
study on system of storage of paddy, wheat
and gur at farm and market level. A study
of income and consumption pattern of different
categories of rural population, cost and
return analysis of important crops, Structure
and flow of institutional credit and An enquiry into the marketing cost of cereals, pulses, oilseeds and other important
crops, Constraints to Agricultural production
in different districts etc. have been under
taken. The department has also been engaged
in conducting research on production, marketing
and storage of vegetable, potato & fruit crops like guava, mango etc.

In
addition this department supplies and supports
information to Farm Price Advisory Services
(U.P.). The contribution of deptt. in the
field of diagnostics research under NARP
and ACRP is visible through national conferences.
Workshops/seminar. Dr. R.K. Singh of this
deptt. has been contributing much since 1984.
He visited several Asian, European and American
countries to glorify the advancement and
achievements of the International authorities in the field of Agricultural Economics.
